“Ethics Tonight – Season 2021” is a 3-hour CLE Ethics Program. Three video vignettes in the style of a late-night talk show shed light on ethical issues that many attorneys face daily. A group of panelists will apply the Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct to the analysis of the issues presented.
The legal profession, like other industries and professions, has not been able to eradicate sexual harassment and more can be done. This program will discuss a recent study of the issue in the legal profession, the effect on individuals and the profession, and propose some additional tools with which to tackle it, including “active ally actions” and the Rules of Professional Conduct.
This program will address ethical, malpractice, and risk management issues that can arise when lawyers enter into various business relationships with other lawyers. Topics presented will include co-counsel and of counsel relationships, the use of contract attorneys, office sharing concerns, and things to think about when buying a law practice.
In a 2021 ALPS Insurance survey of women attorneys, over 1/3 of respondents reported they were “dissatisfied” or “very dissatisfied” with their work/life balance. It seems there is a disconnect between the number of women in law schools and the number of women who enter (or remain) in the legal profession. That’s bad news for business and not a good indicator for the current culture of law practice.

Then, she’ll go over how a law firm can build a strong defense against these attackers and show what attorneys can do to effectively defend their law firm, their client data, and other valuable assets against cyberattacks.
The program will begin with a brief review of the specific conflict rules from the Rules of Professional Conduct. From there, Mark will challenge the typical excuses for not maintaining a formal conflict checking system and detail what a state of the art conflict checking process looks like.
