Alan is the senior member of the law firm of Furniss, Davis, Rashkind and Saunders, P.C., in Norfolk, where he is a civil litigator who practices in state and federal trial and appellate courts.  He regularly represents insurers and their insureds, local governments and their employees, and lawyers facing professional liability claims; he also serves as a mediator.  In 1969, Alan earned a B. A. degree from Randolph-Macon College and earned a J. D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1972.

He is a member of numerous bar groups, including the LGA, VADA, DRI and the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel. Alan is the co-author of the Virginia Insurance Case Finder, and a past chair of the Boyd-Graves Conference. He is a Fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation, the American Bar Foundation, and the American College of Trial Lawyers, and served as an adjunct faculty member at William & Mary Law School from 2003 through 2013. Alan is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, Virginia Super Lawyers (Top 100 lawyers) and several Who’s Who publications.
